Disobedience – Surprise Screening
‘This is richly satisfying and powerfully acted work.’
– The Guardian
Successful New York based photographer Ronit (Rachel Weisz) is suddenly called home to the UK when her estranged Rabbi father dies. There she is drawn back into a deeply conservative world she had previously rebelled and run away from. Stirring further controversy, Ronit begins an illicit affair with her old friend Esti (Rachel McAdams) who is now married to her father’s successor.
McAdams and Weisz deliver their career best performances, exuding palpable on-screen chemistry as the conflicted lovers. In his English language debut, Chilean director Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman, Best Foreign Language Oscar 2018) has proven once again that he is the go-to director for portrayals of complex, multifaceted women. With Disobedience he has created an engrossing, sensual and deeply felt love story.
