Synopsis

‘Mr Maupin invented San Francisco.’

– Quentin Crisp

Winner of the Audience Award at SXSW Film Festival 2017, The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin details the trailblazing career of the consummate chronicler of San Francisco life. Author of the popular book series turned television miniseries Tales of the City, Maupin wrote about taboo subject matter in an engrossing and accessible manner.

Featuring revealing interviews with Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis and Sir Ian McKellen, director Jennifer M. Kroot’s (To Be Takei, MQFF 2015) film becomes more than just about Maupin. In Untold Tales, she explores the social changes of San Francisco across generations, with his dalliances with Rock Hudson, his experience of the AIDS crisis and the gentrification of the Castro. Much like the effect Tales of the City has had on generations of readers, this documentary will enchant you.
