Director: Joe Stephenson

Documentary | Gay | Queer | UNCLASSIFIED 18+ | 96 MINS | UK | 2017

Synopsis

MELBOURNE PREMIERE

Built upon a 14 hour interview, McKellen: Playing the part is a unique journey through the key landmarks of McKellen’s life, from early childhood into a demanding career that placed him in the public eye for the best part of his lifetime. McKellen’s candid thoughts on his own coming out experience are poignantly played out against the backdrop of the encroaching AIDS epidemic and the loss of his lover. Using an abundance of photography from McKellen’s private albums and featuring clips from some of his most famous roles, a raw talent shines through in the intensity, variety and devotion to that moment in the light.
