Pain and Glory – MQFF eXtra Opening Night
Please join us for the inaugural opening night of MQFF eXtra, with drink on arrival and canapés from 6:00pm at the Nova Bar, and film to follow.
Acclaimed queer director Pedro Almodóvar has delivered his masterwork with this deeply personal and heartfelt reflection on his career and life.
Antonio Banderas (in a career best performance) acts as the director’s avatar here, playing a filmmaker grappling with writer’s block, crippling back pain and a late in life opiate habit. Ironically, it’s this addiction that unlocks his creative juices and the past as he reflects on key figures in his life, his resilient mother (played by a radiant Penelope Cruz), his first love and the man that got away.
Although there has been a creeping sense of melancholy in his later work, like any Almodóvar, expect sumptuous production design, heartfelt emotion, wicked humour and the deep pull of longing and desire. Pain and Glory is absolutely glorious indeed.
“Pain and Glory, the filmmaker’s best and most personal movie in years.”
