Portrait of a Lady on Fire – MQFF eXtra Closing Night
Please join us for the inaugural closing night of MQFF eXtra, with drink on arrival from 6:00pm at the Nova Bar, with film to follow.
Brittany, 1770. Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a painter, is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel,) a reluctant bride to be. Refusing to pose for a wedding portrait, Marianne must paint her without her knowledge. The two women quickly form a friendship and as she secretly observes her for the painting, they begin to fall in love.
Director Céline Sciamma (Water Lilies, Girlhood, Tomboy) has created an achingly romantic, passionate and intelligent film with a very particular female gaze on art, love and desire. Immensely satisfying and moving, this rapturous, emotive love story is an instant queer classic.
This film is presented in French with English Subtitles.
“Razor-sharp and shatteringly romantic… as perfect a film as any to have premiered this year.”
“Sciamma’s ravishing celebration of female passion and desire is rooted in mutual sexual awakening but ultimately becomes a story of a much deeper, more spiritual kind of love.”
