A Statement from MQFF on Religious Discrimination Legislation

Melbourne Queer Film Festival (MQFF) wishes to make the following statement in relation to the news on religious discrimination legislation.

This week, the Federal Government abandoned its 2022 commitment to reform religious discrimination laws.

Currently, Section 38 of the Sex Discrimination Act remains in place, allowing religious institutions to discriminate against individuals based on sexuality and gender. This needs to end.

Australia has an opportunity to model LGBTQIA+ equality and proper discrimination protections to the world. Internationally, so many countries are regressing in these rights; we must demonstrate a way to move forward.” – David Martin Harris, Chief Executive Officer of MQFF

As it stands, LGBTQIA+ folk who engage with or work in faith-based organisations, including schools, are experiencing discrimination. This includes teachers being fired and students being expelled or denied education based on their sexuality and/or gender identity. MQFF calls for the end of LGBTQIA+ discrimination, no matter the setting. It is vitally important that students and teachers are affirmed and supported.

The abandonment of this promised reform is incredibly disappointing and highlights the urgent need for change.

MQFF is dedicated to upholding a platform for advocacy, visibility, and the voices of LGBTQIA+ people. Join us and take action now to protect our communities from harmful discrimination.
